A new restaurant just opened in the Cass Corridor, downtown Detroit is getting a bagel counter, and two grocery stores are headed to the suburbs: a Trader Joe's in Farmington Hills and the first Whole Foods in Macomb County. Here's the full story on each one, with links to the reporting behind it.

What's on the menu

"Spiedo" is Italian for spit roasting, and the kitchen is built around vertical rotisseries. The Detroit Free Press describes the food as Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, drawing on Georgia, Turkey and Italy. A typical dinner starts with dips and flatbread, moves on to vegetable plates, and finishes with bigger dishes. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.

The Detroit menu is bigger than the one in Ann Arbor. Greenhill told the Free Press:

"We've added more small vegetable items and plates, charcoal grilled skewers and larger format dishes to share."

He also said Takoi's influence shows up in Thai-style touches like chiles and fish sauce. In his words, "You can take the man out of Takoi, but you can't take Takoi out of the man." There's an expanded wine list and cocktails from a full bar.

Inside the room

The restaurant seats more than 80. The Detroit News reported the dining room has rail seating, banquettes, and a 12-person round table with a lazy Susan in the middle of the room. Most of the front of the house was remodeled. The interior was designed by Undecorated, the firm founded by Ishtiaq Rafiuddin, which also worked on Takoi, Magnet and the original Spiedo.

The people behind it

Takoi started as a food truck about 12 years ago before settling into a full restaurant on Michigan Avenue at the west end of Corktown. Greenhill also ran a Takoi pop-up, then called Katoi, in Ann Arbor in 2015 and 2016, in the same Fifth Avenue space where Spiedo later opened. Goldberg was Takoi's head chef in 2023, when the two announced Spiedo.

The first Spiedo opened in fall 2023 at 307 S. Fifth Ave. in downtown Ann Arbor. It's a small, casual spot of about 1,300 square feet built around flatbread sandwiches, rice bowls and vegetables. When it was announced, Takoi promised "a much more casual vibe with a heavy dose of color and unhinged fun."

The block

Jolly Pumpkin closed its Midtown taproom and pizzeria at the end of March. At the time, Axios Detroit noted the block was left with no restaurants or bars, and that Motor City Brewing Works across the street had closed the winter before. Spiedo puts a restaurant back on a stretch of Canfield that also has Third Man Records, Carhartt, Shinola, City Bird and Bon Bon Bon.

Downtown Detroit is getting a bagel counter. Einstein Bros. Bagels set Monday, Oct. 19 as opening day for its first downtown Detroit location, a walk-up counter of about 1,200 square feet in the first-floor lobby of One Campus Martius, next to True Market.

Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Size

Ordering
Walk up, or order through third-party delivery. Catering is coming later.

Why it's news

When the location was announced in September, Deadline Detroit put it this way: "Downtown Detroit has had a lot of different restaurants, but a bagel shop isn't one of them." Tim Hortons used to sell bagels in the same building, but it's no longer there.

What's on the menu

Bagels, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and a pizza bagel. The Free Press lists signature sandwiches made with Nova lox, turkey, bacon and avocado. For drinks there are hot and iced lattes, hot and cold brewed coffee, and fruit refreshers.

Who's running it

It's a franchise owned by Randy Dickow, president of food and beverage for Cicero Hospitality, which also runs Adelina on Woodward, near the new location, and Bell Bistro in Birmingham. There are more than 15 Einstein Bros. locations around Metro Detroit, and in May the Bruegger's Bagels shops in Michigan were converted to Einstein Bros., according to the Free Press.

About the building

One Campus Martius opened in 2003 as Compuware's headquarters, 15 stories on Woodward next to Campus Martius Park. A Bedrock-led group bought it in 2014 and gave it its current name in 2015. Today it's home to Rocket's headquarters and Microsoft's regional office. Its 12-story parking garage sits on top of the People Mover's Cadillac Center station, and the QLine runs past on Woodward.

More new food downtown this year

Einstein joins a run of downtown openings in 2026, per the Free Press: Chick-fil-A in the First National Building in January, Sunda New Asian in March, the Pine Hall rooftop lounge at Hudson's Detroit in June, and Unc's Pizza in Capitol Park and Joe Louis Southern Kitchen in August.

Trader Joe's is opening a store at 27658 Middlebelt Road, in the shopping center at Middlebelt and 12 Mile on the east side of Farmington Hills. Last week the chain put it on a list of 30 new stores planned across the country, and it was the only new location in Michigan.

How we got here

This one isn't brand new news. Deadline Detroit and WXYZ first reported the plans on May 21 and 22, and Deadline Detroit said at the time the chain planned to open the store this year. What changed on Oct. 20 is that Trader Joe's added Farmington Hills to its list of upcoming stores. There is still no opening date.

Where it's going

The store is going into a building it will share with Planet Fitness and Hungry Howie's Pizza. The same plaza also has The Bank wedding venue and Asia Grocers, according to What Now Detroit.

The nearest Trader Joe's today

For now, the closest stores to Farmington Hills are in Northville (18771 Traditions Drive) and Bloomfield Hills (6536 Telegraph Road). Metro Detroit also has Trader Joe's in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Grosse Pointe, Rochester Hills and Royal Oak. The city of Detroit still doesn't have one. Deadline Detroit noted that back in 2015 the chain said it had "nothing immediately planned" for Detroit, and as of May there was still no store in the city.

Shelby Township · Macomb County

Macomb County is getting its first Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market is opening at 13975 Hall Road near Schoenherr in Shelby Township, the first Whole Foods in Macomb County. Crain's Detroit Business broke the news on Oct. 8, and Amazon, which owns Whole Foods, confirmed it to The Detroit News:

A Gander Mountain store, later tied to Amazon Fresh plans that never opened

The building's long road

The building is the old Gander Mountain store. In 2020 the township approved a plan for an undisclosed tenant to redo the front of the building and the parking lot. In 2021 a company called "Mendel Grocery Store" applied for zoning approval, a name C&G Newspapers reported was known as a code name for Amazon's grocery stores. Local officials said the building was meant to be an Amazon Fresh, but Amazon never confirmed it. A township planner told C&G the site had been under construction since, with what he believed was "a year or two interruption."

Why it's a Whole Foods now

On Jan. 27, Amazon announced it was closing all of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, 57 Fresh and 15 Go at the time, turning some of them into Whole Foods, and opening more than 100 new Whole Foods stores over the next few years, according to the Associated Press. Amazon said it hadn't "yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion."

In February, the township's planning director told C&G no formal plans had come in for the building. By May, the zoning board of appeals had approved extra wall signs so the store can be seen from Hall Road, according to a Free Press report cited by WCSX. Then came the Oct. 8 confirmation.

Shelby Township wasn't the only Metro Detroit site tied to Amazon Fresh. A Free Press investigation, also cited by WCSX, found Amazon Fresh stores had been planned in Dearborn, Roseville, St. Clair Shores, Madison Heights, Rochester Hills, Plymouth Township and Livonia, and none of them opened.
